JWRT – after all the hard work, its finally game time.
In life, we learn from those who have gone before. The same is true of sport.
This Father’s Day, as I wait for the start of my first International Tournament as a coach I realise how much I have to thank him for and also those who have helped grow this great sport.
As a player I learnt for my father’s knowledge and passion which he gained from his experience as a player. I benefited from the structure of the professional game formed by the previous generation that allowed me to focus on rugby full-time.
The current generation of USA rugby players that I have been working with in the build-up to the JWRT have it better than their predecessors in terms of resources, technology, coaching and training techniques.
The opportunities and rewards are greater – professional contracts, college scholarships, Olympic medals, Rugby World Cups – and so too is the expectation.
This USA Rugby U20s side will take to the field in an International tournament on home soil and I know they will do us proud.
Their skill and endeavours in the JWRT will inspire some of those youngsters in the stadium or watching at home to pick up the ball and run, just as William Webb Ellis did, and they will have played their part in the growth of rugby in the US.
Now that I am a coach I will teach those I work with all that I know from my time on the field, just as I learned from my father and those I played for and with. The team of coaches I have the privilege of working with and the men who take to the pitch in the JWRT have made this a very special few weeks and I continue to learn from them too.
We all learn from those who have gone before.
We are all standing on the shoulders of giants.
Time to show what we’ve learned…
