Common mistakes by hookers:
Hesitation by the hooker leads to a crooked throw
The hooker drops his hands after releasing the ball, resulting in a crooked throw
This hooker’s throwing technique does not allow for distance or accuracy
Lineout throwing is the most difficult skill to execute consistently in rugby. Hookers must battle against fatigue, noise, opposition lineout jumpers and weather conditions. However, accurate throwing is a basic prerequisite skill for top class hookers.
Ensuring that the hooker can deliver a wide range of accurate throws, provides the team with a potent attacking platform.
Through my experiences as a player and as a coach I have developed a deep understanding of lineout play. Along with various coaches and on my own, I have spent hours upon hours analysing videos of set piece play, particularly lineouts.
I have recognized the need for access to a specialist throwing coach. Too often it is taken for granted that a hooker can throw a variety of accurate and consistent lineout throws under immense pressure. This is a specialist skill which requires ongoing practice and attention.
