USA7s Highlights: Surviving Vegas 2013

USA Sevens happens once a year and that’s about all I could cope with at my age!

The festival of rugby which covers all ages and formats of the game brings out ever larger crowds of rugby fans and new converts to the game as Las Vegas plays host to one of the most popular legs on the IRB Sevens Tour.

The event continues to grow, with extensive domestic TV coverage in the US and around the world. Even Twitter was all a buzz with #USA7s chat and the hashtag trended in the US and beyond over the weekend.

Weren’t able to make it this year? Here’s what you missed…

Watch the Games

Rugby 7s played at the top level is a fast’n’furious ride. The teams that came to the 2013 event showed the investment which has been made in the sport since its announcement as an Olympic event in Rio 2016. All the teams are getting closer in terms of skills and strength in depth to their squads and matches are increasingly difficult to predict.

Vegas also throws up its own challenge as the venue, the Sam Boyd Stadium is an American Football Stadium so the dimensions of the pitch make for a tight game.

The field here at Las Vegas is an American football field which means its very narrow for rugby. That makes a huge difference in #rugby7s

Las Vegas Invitational

Special note should be made to the teams who take part in the Las Vegas Invitational event which is held in the shade of the Sam Boyd Stadium and at Heritage Park across the city. It attracts Men’s &Women’s, College and Junior teams from across America in a non-stop festival of 7s and XVs rugby.

The event offers coaches and players the chance to take part in a national event and test their skills and playing styles on the hard pitches of Nevada. It was great to see players from my former team High Schools Team Wilson High continuing their rugby journey and see their progress.

See The Stars

Carlin Isles continues to impress with his speed and was the focus of much attention from the media over the weekend. Click here to see Alex Goff of RugbyMag catching a few words with the new name in 7s rugby.

Enjoy The Madness

I’ve seen some crazy sights in my time in Vegas and this years fans did not fail to disappoint. Excellent work all.

Just Drop In

Perhaps the oddest sight though was the parachutist who landed on the field with the match ball for the Final. Unfortunately they had failed to tell him that the Samoa v Fiji 3rd and 4th place play off had gone into overtime!

Well it wouldn’t be Vegas without a little crazy going on! See you all next year.

Oh, and the winner of the USA Sevens 2013 was…South Africa!
